To some it might not seem such an importance to discover a difference in translations such as in this verse. I have heard people get angry at discoveries just like this and they will say, "the KJV is good enough to save souls and that is the most important thing!" Others have said that they "cannot clearly see a difference in these translations and that the KJV has made no mistake." If someone is having a difficult time observing these differences or it seems to make them upset it is because their beliefs have been challenged. There is a term for this and it is called "cognitive dissonance," which is a fancy way of saying someone has thrown a wrench into your gears.

My mission is not to discredit the KJV as it may seem. I do not have an agenda against this version of the Word. I grew up on this version. I was baptized in the North Platte River at 8 years old under this version. I have seen souls saved and lives changed under this version of the Bible. I have seen sinners crawl to the alter bawling, and preachers kick down a pulpit on this version of Gods Word. My only indifference is the understanding it brings. The KJV is incredibly complicated to understand and many have said so. I have seen churches and pastors esteem the KJV to the highest pedestal and that no other translation should ever be considered. This is where I find a problem. I find the same problem in any form of study no matter the version of the Word. So, my mission is entirely to encourage a search for deeper understanding of the Word. The best way to do this is number one: through prayer, and number two: use a dictionary, or several dictionaries.

I encourage religion to let go of their translations if the Spirit of Truth calls for it and search for a deeper understanding of God. Most scholars would agree that studying the original languages of the Word during that precious time Jesus walked on earth is the correct way Bible study should be performed. Studying Word for Word can also be tricky. So, its important to remember the context, the perception, and the intent of the writer themselves. This is why there are pastors. But I would argue that many of the worlds pastors fail to do this and could do a much better job at bringing understanding to Gods Word.

Words are like thoughts. If we know the meaning of a word it will bring that word to life as we use it. If the meaning of a word has been watered down or changed, the thought that would be inspired with that word will not produce the type of understanding that is meant for the context that word is used in. So yes, translation is very important.

The KJV says "You are the light of the world!" What a beautiful statement, it brings us back to verse 13 where we are also "the salt of the earth." The Greek also uses this term, meaning cosmos and orderly arrangement. Another Greek term for "world" is the Greek word Aion.-Strongs 165. Aion means world in the sense of time and also means, AGES. A cycle, a period of time, an ancient time, etc. It does not mean world as we would think of the word world. An age is a cycle of time. There are different cycles of times hence there are different worlds. The world as we know it today is dramatically different than the world was when Jesus walked the earth. We are the light of the world, we are the light of the ages! The Hebrew language translates light as illumination, enlightenment, or even fire. God is the source of light, enlightenment, illumination, and fire. All of these things continually bleed from His presence. This verse could be understood as, we are THE ILLUMINATION OF TIME! We know that this does not mean us directly, but He who lives in us. It is His character, His love, His righteousness, and justice that works through us which brings the light and unveils all things throughout the worlds and time.

The Hebrew word for this specific passage translates most precisely as "to become light." We are to become the light of God. The only way to do this is through His Son, and His Son through us. It is said in Psalms 82 "you are gods." And again, Jesus elaborates on this In John 10. God has made us in His image and He is the image of light. He is the source of it. When His light shines through us and into the lives of everyone around us we are just like Him! We are gods! We are like our Father our Maker in Heaven. We Are a Royal Priesthood of the One True Most High God! We have no business moping around feeling sorry, depressed, angry, sad, hurtful and hateful. We have to get out of those pits of despair because they are dungeons and chains for the Sons and Daughters of God!

Our Messiah continues in the second part of this verse with "a city set on a hill cannot be hid," the KJV version reads. In our Hebrew translation we can see that mountain and hill come from the same root word. The Hebrew translation also provides an interesting adjective to this noun which states, "The Highest Mountain." Where is the highest mountain?

It is our Father in Heaven who provides us the light for our worlds, for our time, past present and future. His light to us is His Son our Savior who paid for us with His blood. Without him there is no light. There is no hiding a flame because if you do, it usually burns out.

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

To walk in Him is to let Him walk in us. He must be working in our hearts and through our hearts. We must diligently search Him out everyday as we pick up our cross and follow him. As we sacrifice ourselves so that He can be made manifest within us. Our character becomes His character. We receive His light when we dwell on His highest mountain. It is a light that illuminates all the ages.
