King James Version Matthew 5: 16

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Apostolic Bible Polyglot Greek Matthew 5: 16

In this particular section of The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is speaking to his disciples about how they are the salt and light of the world. "Let your light shine", Jesus tells his followers to let their light shine before others. What does it mean to let your light shine? In this context, it means to live out your faith in a way that others can see. It's not about bragging or drawing attention to yourself, but rather about living a life that reflects the love and goodness of God and His character.

Jesus specifically says that others should see your good deeds. Some examples of good deeds could be acts of kindness, generosity, service, or even simply being a good listener or encourager. Good deeds can be big or small, but they should all reflect the character of God.

The ultimate goal of letting your light shine and doing good deeds is to bring glory to God. When others see the way you live your life, they should be drawn to the goodness and love of God. Your actions should be a testimony to your faith and a way to point others to Christ.

Bringing others closer to God by walking the path that leads others to Him is one of the main responsibilities we have as believers in Christ. This can sometimes be difficult. It is easy to let our pride or selfishness get in the way of that responsibility. We must acknowledge our sins and repent of them to continue pursuing the best example of Gods light that we can for others to follow.

I hold The Sermon on the Mount so highly and as one of the best transcripts of the Bible. Possibly because of the conviction it continues to give me. This sermon is the declaration for citizenship in the Kingdom of Heaven and each line and each verse convicts me to my core. I have failed in every aspect of this wonderful declaration. How I pray and hope that I may be able to just get my foot in the door.

I am repeatedly reminded that nothing I can do will grant an entrance to this wonderful amazing place. I can only hope on the grace of God, which is His Son and what He fulfilled for all of mankind on the cross. I will never have enough mercy. I will never be humble enough. I will never be kind enough or love enough. I will never be a perfect example of Christs character. All I can do is put my hope in Jesus. I can let my little light shine just like the Sunday school song goes.

This week let us reflect on how we can let our light shine on others. What can we do to lead others to Christ in this dark, sick, and cruel world? Day by day our actions must match our faith. Who can we help? Who can we serve? Who can we forgive? Let us shine just as our Father commands us to do.
