King James Version Matthew 5: 20

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Legō gar hymin hoti ean mē perisseusē hymōn hē dikaiosynē pleion tōn grammateōn kai Pharisaiōn, ou mē eiselthēte eis tēn basileian tōn ouranōn.

For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds [that] of the scribes and pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Salkinson-Ginsburg Hebrew NT Matthew 5: 20 (Read Left To Right)

Vaaniy amar lakhem im ltgdl tzdktkhm mitzadeket hasof'riym v'hap'rusiym lo tvv lamal'khut hashׁamayim:

And I tell you, if your righteousness does not increase from the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heavens.

The Pharisees are known to be very hypocritical when it comes to Yahushas teachings and the Son of God makes it clear several times when He is addressing them.

This is because Yahusha teaches about the heart, and how to set the heart on God above all things.

His teachings exposes the Pharisees whose hearts were set on their works to please God. They had found a way to freely commit their sins, then they would make a sacrifice for forgiveness.

Because of this they were stuck in a circle of repeated wickedness with no real change in their hearts.

The Pharisees were happy with the way things were and Yahusha was bringing change.

They didn't want to change and Yahusha exposed the true intention of their hearts. So He immediately became their enemy.

Verse 20 is a stark warning for others regarding the state of the heart of the Pharisees. Our righteousness must come from the heart.

A desire for real change and true repentance must abound the inner core of our souls daily.

To worship God with our actions is one thing, but to worship God with our hearts is another.

The Pharisees loved their sin. Their works did not match their hearts or the words of their mouth. Their hearts were far from God.

This is what Yahusha means when He says our righteousness must exceed theirs.

In verses 17-19 we studied how Yahusha has fulfilled the law and has set the example for us to follow the law as well.

In verse 20 He makes the distinction of how NOT to follow the law.

If we truly follow the two greatest commandments of all time which is to love God and love our neighbor then we will desire to obey Gods commandments of the law within our hearts.

The love of God will be perfected within our hearts and when this happens we can truly follow Gods law.

The Pharisees did not love God with their hearts, they loved themselves. Do not be like the Pharisees. Remember this warning from the mouth of the Holy Son of God.

Let us search God with all our heart.
