Sabbath Bible Study

'An eye for an eye,' Exodus 21:24 is part of the old law. Yahusha completely does away with this with His new declarations. Though His teaching might not be as direct as it seems when we look deeper into His meanings.

First of all, the old law is always a physical appearance. This law specifically was intended for judges in courts and high places. Not for every man who felt vengeance for someone who had wronged him. The old law was used to purge evil out of Gods people, to separate them from the rest of the world.

The new law, Yahushas law, is absolutely no different as contradicting as it might seem. The difference in the new law is it directs the heart. The new law purges evil out of the heart, of every child of God individually.

I would like to point out that Yahusha Himself is not as passive as this verse sounds. In John 18:22-23 Yahusha rebukes an officer for striking Him. It would be against natural law and all common sense for a man to sit idly while he would watch his family being slaughtered. Self defense is righteous, or King David never would have gone to war.

So what does it all mean?

David And Goliath

The 'eye for an eye' concept was meant to put a restraint on retaliation and vengeance. That if a man had been wronged or injured that he wouldn't retaliate beyond the lost cost of his injury.

Many us know the fire that burns within when we seek revenge or wish someone to receive the justice we perceive is right within our own minds. It would be easy to cause more damage than we have been damaged. That is the purpose of this old law.

Yahushas new law however, reminds us that we cannot fight fire with fire. I say this all the time. This is the final concept of this chapter. Yahusha is pressing within us to love over anger, and to forgive over pain, because love covers a multitude of sins.

It does not mean that we should give every penny we have to someone simply because they ask for it. Although that is not a far concept from the church born in the book of Acts.

If we are to do to others only what is done to us that would make us the same as them. If someone murders my brother, and I go and murder his brother...is there any real difference between him and I?

I would have become what I hate. Yahusha teaches forgiveness, patience, and love over retaliation and vengeance. That is the main point of these verses.

Does YAH forgive us for our own good, or does He forgive us because He is good? He forgives us because that is who He is...right? To forgive someone is to release yourself from that pain, and to better yourself.

To hold on to that pain and resentment is to cause injury to yourself. You're not hurting anyone but you. There is an old saying that goes 'Let go or be dragged.' Since YAH is perfect, He has to forgive us for HIS SAKE and NOT OURS.

This same character trait is what Yahusha is pressing into us with these teachings. In a world often marked with conflict and vengeance, be the peace, be the light, be the difference. Be love and forgiveness.
